As in many Hessian villages, the medieval core of Kalbach is marked by the Hofreite farmstead layout for which living quarters, stables and barn are grouped around a courtyard. The design picks up on this building tradition with a cross angled layout towards both the street and the front yard of the neighboring Sparkasse bank. Its main facade presents the ending point of the setup, while its back wing spreads around the private inner courtyard. The typical three-sided Hofreite layout is thus transformed and creates an ensemble together with the adjacent buildings. The view towards Kahlbacher Hauptstraße is marked by a threefold rhythm of gabled and flat facades, thus reflecting the local typology. Details like shutters, plaster facades and sloping roofs with eaves cornices further connect the project with its surroundings.
